A dieter's dream

I have been told by my parents that sometime in my idyllic childhood I developed an unhealthy fascination for cucumbers. I would eat nothing else. Since my parents had no certainty that I would develop into the fine, strapping forty-something I am now, they were worried.

You see, cucumbers are among the most calorifically deficient fruits to be found. If you were a man, you would need to eat something like fifteen kilogrammes of cucumbers to come close to meeting your required daily energy needs. But interestingly, this calorifically challenged salad decoration is rich in vitamins A and C, as well as iron and calcium. Who knew?
